I always like to emphasise that it is of the most importance to care for the soil and the vines. I prefer to use natural methods that are less invasive that helps improving the structure of vines without the use of chemicals or aggressive processing techniques.

I use “green manure” to enrich the soil with organic substances: an ancient method that dates back to the Roman time and very useful for the vines.

PLANTS

USED

I use leguminous plants for the green manure (clover, sulla coronaria or French honeysuckle, birdsfoot trefoil, sainfoin, alfalfa, vetch, lentil, bean, field pea, broad bean) that naturally release nitrogen into the field through their roots. In fact, it is the nitrogen that promotes the vegetative development, as it is the plastic element by excellence.
I also use already made leguminous and gramineous mixtures of green manure often mixed with other useful species.

ADVANTAGES

The advantages of green manure are various: firstly, it helps improving the structure and porosity of the soil, as well as improving the content of the organic substance and texture of the land; secondly, it helps the deepening of the cultivated plant roots; thirdly, it holds the water and contributes to rising micro elements into the surface, such as iron, boron, chlorine, manganese and many more; finally, it increases the biodiversity and it increments the presence of the useful insects.
